Tried and authentic tips to earn more money by working freely.
Since I started doing freelance work about a year ago, I have had the opportunity to work with twelve slow startups and world-class professionals. And I have never had to negotiate the premium prices I charge for my content marketing services, which is why I would like to share with you tips on how to get started freelance and how to make money by doing so, even if you restart a complete start.
Because I have done such an effective job of explaining my value propositions, branding myself as an expert in my field, and getting my content independent in front of my new target audience, I now have a 3-6 month waiting list for myself. clients and private services.
However, that certainly did not happen overnight. My immediate success in the world of freelancing is the result of a LOT of strategic standing, hours of hard work, and a good time.
When you are ready to take it seriously by working freely and increasing your self-employment, here are my top twelve tips for earning more in your first year doing freelance work.
1. Choose a Niche
If your goal is to start working freely, you may feel ready to take ANY paid job at Fiverr or Upwork you can get. But as you deepen in your career, you will need to begin to have more strategies about the types of work you do and the clients you take on.
You may be thinking: How can choosing a career help me make more money?
If you are an expert in a set of skills, you become an expert in a particular field, and professionals can charge you extra for their specialized services (there are professional and technical sections on Upwork and Fiverr as well).
In my opinion, the old debate over whether you should be an expert or a generalist (opens in a new tab) when you start your independent career should not even be considered twice.
If you were a client and needed someone to fix your email marketing so that people could actually sign up, write ads that convince people to buy, or simply update your outdated website, you could choose to hire a janitor for all things, or someone with experience in doing one thing and doing it. well? I will always choose an expert.
When it comes to my experience, choosing to be a content marketing expert - instead of being a regular digital marketer for my job - has been one of the best decisions I can make for my private business.
Because I have built a reputation with clients as a talented content market over the past few years and I often engage with marketing content on various social media channels, I have been able to rise to the top of my niche in a short period of time. time. In addition to my blog and existing customer referrals, the next constant source of new customers comes from business owners looking for some professional help with both Google search and social media.
To extend this example to other fields, consider you just starting out as a web developer - you can get into a place like migrating blogs to WordPress. That means that if someone searches for “blog migration help on WordPress,” they can find it. This also works for graphic designers: you can do a graphic design for WordPress.
If you choose the right niche, deciding on sanctification and making some effort to brand yourself as an expert within your niche can really pay off for years to come.
2. Specify Your Service Offerings
One big decision you need to make early in your independent career is what you do and what you do not do.
The more specific you can be about the services you provide, the better. Not only will it help you to brand yourself, it will allow you to control how your potential customers see you and give you the opportunity to continue building your portfolio wherever you want to go.
If you want to focus on being a desired developer, highly paid for Rails, you should not consider contracting offers to customize WordPress themes or design a future user experience.
While the short-term benefits of a steady job are tempting (and sometimes necessary), taking projects that do not bring you closer to your ultimate goal of being the best in your field, will only distract you and hinder you from making meaningful progress.
3. Describe What Your Best Client Looks Like
Before you go out and start looking for customers, you will need to create a clear picture of who you will work with better. Do you want to create websites for small business owners, make a name for yourself through blogging as a professional blogger, work as a copywriter, get into the development of a new element of growing technology, or take long-term contracts with business size companies? Or maybe you want to work for brands and clients with prices that match yours, etc.
Making this clear distinction between who and what type of business you are directing will be important in order to deliver your services effectively.
To better define who your private customers should be (and how to start getting them), ask yourself these questions:
- What type of business do I have problems with my services?
- Can the business I want to work with hire me?
- What demographic trends can I see about decision makers in the types of businesses I target? Think: age, gender, location, the websites they frequently visit, and their interests.
Because I know I will be very busy and work with small beginner groups working on projects that I can relate to personally, I have consistently chosen to make the scope of my clients smaller. By working with similar startup teams, potential new clients I have directed within my niche are able to relate to me instantly, and I am confident I will be able to duplicate my business results, too.
4. Create a Higher Portfolio
It does not mean that one of the best ways to show off your technical skills is to have an amazing portfolio domain (which opens in a new tab) of your own. If you want to be taken seriously as a new freelancer, you will need a website that:
- It shows your expertise.
- Highlights past related feelings.
- It shows who you are.
- Includes your contact details so potential customers can find you easily.
A stellar portfolio can really help you if you do not have a lot of work experience or proof to prove that you know your stuff. (Read more about it here: 11 Paid Paid Jobs in Tech — No Experience Needed.)
The purpose of your portfolio is to educate, arouse interest, and reassure potential customers that they will want to choose their technical needs for you. That's why it's important to invest time in deciding what to include in your portfolio and how it is displayed - before you start looking for new projects.
Once your portfolio is complete, start putting a link to the site within your email signature and your social media profiles.
5. Start Freelancing Before Quitting Your Day Work
I am a big fan of starting a private business while keeping your day job (or working part-time), instead of pursuing self-employment quickly.
In addition to the fact that building a high-quality portfolio website, building your own brand, and adding your portfolio naturally takes a good time, it is a good idea to have a few independent clients on your list before just putting your axing on. source of income.
I recommend that you increase your side income to at least 50–75% of your current income before leaving your full-time job, depending on your risk tolerance.
Managing a solid system, heavy workload (including private projects), and being responsible for delivering customer service over time will quickly teach you what it is like to run your business.
Another amazing benefit of picking up private clients while still working full time is that you can choose. You probably do not need money at all. This puts you in a position to turn down an offer that you may not pay enough to give a reason for investing your time, or that you have no real interest in it.
Here are two key pointers in moving your finances forward.
6. Develop Your Skills
The best way to justify high prices every hour? Make sure you have the impressive skills needed.
Practice your new skills by creating the types of projects you want to get paid for in the future. Whether it’s WordPress websites, mobile apps, or something else entirely, like graphic design, copying, etc., the more you can differentiate yourself from the sea of competition with cool side projects and examples that will attract potential customers, the better.
Also keep in mind that while highly trained freelancers may not be well paid for their work, you do not need to go back to school to get a BS in computer science to get on a train. Taking online classes as a Skillcrush Front End Development course can put you on the right track and make you take control of your education.
PS - If you want to get started or go to a professional career, Skillcrush can help you get there! Our Break Into Tech course is a comprehensive program designed to help all beginners in technology start a new and satisfying career.
7. Build Your Integrity
There are many ways to build your credibility in your industry.
In addition to creating high quality blog content and collaborating with influential influencers in your industry, you can write an ebook, create an online tutorial, and organize speaking engagements to begin to increase your visibility within your niche.
You can also build your portfolio on private platforms and gig websites by working a slightly lower amount of hour to get started, and expand as you get more information.
These loyalty enhancements can help you add to your list of achievements that you can highlight in your portfolio and at the same time show off your knowledge to see as many potential customers as possible. The more you spread your message, the greater the influence you will build within your niche.
8. Get Your Prices
When deciding how much to charge for your private services is a big step in determining the amount you are considering, you need to make sure you are paying enough to live comfortably, comfortably.
Many customers will not hesitate to pay a high price for a private person who gives them an amazing first impression and sells them the ability to deliver high quality results.
As long as I continue to deliver consistent value to my customers (in addition to their expectations), I have no problem setting up and maintaining the high prices for the services I offer.
Before setting your prices on the minimum amount you need to pay to meet your financial needs, consider the actual amount you will be doing for your potential customers and make sure you do not leave money on the table.
You can always increase your prices in the future and hope that your client will always be there, but if you start at a price point you are already happy with, you will be more likely to bring in excess and continue to increase your value going. forward.
9. Use your network to get entries
One of the most effective ways to get high quality work is to use your existing networks. Whether you’re throwing out your real friends and former colleagues with personal help, or using their connections to make warm presentations to the companies you want to work with, this is another great way to cool communication with potential customers.
Whenever I get an independent opportunity I want to follow in Angel.co (opens in a new tab), CloudPeeps (opens in a new tab), or elsewhere, I give myself 10–15 minutes to research a company, and find my right point. communication, and do a little homework if I have the same connection on LinkedIn, Twitter, or Facebook before accessing via cold email.
If I have contacts, I will contact my friend (only if I am actually a friend of hers) and ask if she would like to send me an email introduction.
This way, when my first impression is endorsed by a recommendation from someone my client may already know, it always gives me higher feedback and closer ratings.
10. Perfect Your Pitching
There is the art and science of sending your private services to new customers.
Finding new clients is not just a matter of making an amazing proposal for independence. Your success depends on how you choose new jobs, how you set your value propositions, and how much research you do ahead of time.
I won new gigs simply because I explicitly put more time and effort into researching the company, finding its needs, and providing a large amount of advance in the form of sensible recommendations before I talk about pay. In the world of freelance, much of your success (and the ability to make money online) will depend on the strength of your client relationship, and how you are able to build meaningful partnerships.
11. Regular Blogging
The goal of having a website that demonstrates your skills to attract and convert new customers. What better way to increase the number of new customers appearing on your website than to create high quality blog content that sets you up as an expert in your field?
Initially, aim to create one or two in-depth blog posts per month, aimed at providing truly useful solutions that your clients may be looking for. Note: That means you will be writing to your customers' audience, not other people in your field.
Once they have found your content and get a free quote from you, you will naturally become a genius when they are ready to hire for intensive care.
I started most of the private contracts I got last year by mentioning the company in a successful blog post on my website. After publishing my detailed post that recounts all the best business ideas (which opens in a new tab), I spent a lot of time reaching out to a carefully selected person for each product or online tool I mentioned, asking if I really mentioned it within the post.
Most of them responded positively or offered a suggestion, which then gave me the opportunity to post a guest post, ask them to share my content with their audience on social media, or open a door to a potential marketing contract.
My blog has so far become my top marketing channel for my private business.
12. Guest Posts on Eligible Industry Blogs and Published Books
Once you have a website that highlights your skills and clearly states that you offer independent services, one of the most effective ways to increase your online visibility is to get content published on blogs and publications where your customers are likely to spend more time.
Marketing expert and consultant Neil Patel often shares major contracts he earns in his business by publishing more than 100 guest posts per year (opens in a new tab).
Although you will be starting at a very small rate, do not underestimate the immediate benefits of getting your content posted to blogs and publications that can drive hundreds or thousands of new visitors to your website.
In less than a year, I was able to get my posts published on Entrepreneur, Inc., Business Insider, HubSpot, and many more published by creating the highest quality content and using my calling skills. This growth seems to have had a positive, positive effect on my business.
